Her maternal grandmother and her mother pushed her to become an actress. She enrolled in Barnard College at 16, and trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, where her teachers included Martha Graham and Sanford Meisner. She had small roles on television and in summer stock theater.

Longtime chair and co-founder of the Feminist Majority Foundation, or FMF. She worked to expand access to abortion and to elect more women to political office.
