- On stage from 1964 at the Liverpool Playhouse. She had lengthy stints with the Bristol Old Vic and with the Royal Shakespeare Company (1981-2007).
- Yates was at one time married to Michael Freeman, a former parliamentary candidate for the Labour Party in Finchley, who came second to future prime minister Margaret Thatcher at the 1970 general election.
- English screen, stage and radio actress, trained at the Bournville College of Art in Birmingham.
