He left school, having failed his 11+, having ambitions to become a footballer or journalist. After dead end jobs as a dispatch clerk and dress salesman, he took his talent for mimicry to the Ponderosa Club in Manchester and earned £30 in his first week as a pro. He was always one for a quiet life and never liked parties or walking into a crowded room.
