His first impression was of Billy Bunter when he was about six, amusing his school pals. His mother tried to stop him as she thought it was rude. He left school, having failed his 11+, having ambitions to become a footballer or journalist. After dead end jobs as a dispatch clerk and dress salesman, he took his talent for mimicry to the Ponderosa Club in Manchester and earned £30 in his first week as a pro. He was always one for a quiet life and never liked parties or walking into a crowded room.
