On January 7, 2023, amid the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine , he was added to Ukraine's sanctions list for publicly supporting Russia's recognition of the LPR and DPR, visiting Russian-occupied territories after the start of military action, participating in propaganda concerts, and publicly supporting the invasion and Putin. Yakubovich had previously been added to the FBK list of corrupt officials and warmongers for supporting the attack on Ukraine, with a proposal to impose international sanctions against him.

On March 15, 2013, Yakubovich harshly criticized Aeroflot at Sheremetyevo Airport, as the Moscow- Ho Chi Minh City flight had been delayed for five hours , according to airport staff, due to inclement weather. Passengers waiting for the flight, including Yakubovich, learned that the planes were actually taking off at the time and nearly started a fight with the airline's employees, leading the TV presenter to take charge.
