- Yan Xia was born on October 30, 1900 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. Yan was a writer, known for Ge ming jia ting (1960), Children of Troubled Times (1935) and The Lin Family Shop (1959). Yan died on February 6, 1995 in Beijing, China.
- Xia Yan, who had organised clandestine Communist cells in the Shanghai studios of the 30s, became the head of the Bureau of Cinema in the new PRC for 15 years from 1951 through 1966, at which point he was a victim of the repressive Cultural Revolution.
