Biography

Herman Wouk was born on May 27, 1915 in New York City, New York, USA. He was a writer and actor, known for The Caine Mutiny (1954), Slattery's Hurricane (1949) and Her First Romance (1951). He was married to Betty Sarah Brown. He died on May 17, 2019 in Palm Springs, California, USA.

Served in the U.S. Navy as Executive Officer on the destroyer-minesweepers U.S.S. Zane and U.S.S. Southard. This later became the inspiration for his novel The Caine Mutiny (1954).

Had three sons. The eldest, Abraham Isaac Wouk, died in 1951, shortly before his fifth birthday.

Is a member of Pi Lambda Phi fraternity, NY Alpha chapter.

Bore a startling resemblance to actor Van Heflin.

Son of Esther (Levine) and Abraham Isaac Wouk. His parents were Jewish emigrants from Minsk, Belarus.

[observation, 2016] Once the human race figured out how to dig uranium from the earth and make a projectile from it, it's really the end of war. In most of my lifetime, the two powers that could do it refrained from doing doing it because it was sheer folly ending in suicidal absurdity.

I'm not out front as a figure and that suits me. I love the work and it's the greatest possible privilege to say, 'Here are books that exist because I had to write them'.
