  • His real name was George Bramlett, born in Jarrow 17 December 1889. He started making stage appearances at the age of five or six in a semi professional minstrel troupe, known in Sunderland as The Local Lads, then joined The Merry Matelots, a pierrot troupe. He went solo in 1904 at the Empire Music Hall n South Shields The following year, he was a member of Levy and Cardwell's Juveniles. He made his first appearance in a concert party in the castle grounds at Barnard Castle in July 1904, while his first appearance in London was at the Shepherds Bush Empire in April 1909 in a sketch called Nursery a Bedtime. Later that year, he toured South Africa and was so popular that he returned two years later. He also played in America in 1915. His act was already popular in the music halls before the First World War. Those early days included imitations of other music hall acts such as Marie Lloyd. During the Second World War he entertained the British troops.

  • While only 4ft 9ins tall, he was a giant of the variety stage. By the time he was fourteen, he was earning £50 a week, which was a fortune in those days. During his 75 year career, he starred with the greatest, including George Forrnby, Gracie Fields and The Crazy Gang, early on sharing the stage with a young Stan Laurel before he went to America. Wee Georgie made his first trip to Hollywood in 1924 and married an American actress in New York in 1932. It was a short affair. In 1946, he was awarded the O.B.E for services to the troops during WWII. Three years later, he started a new career writing and directing shows for American television. In real, life he disliked being the little man who couldn't grow up and came to detest the nickname 'Wee', but what he really hated most of all was being patted on the head. He died at his London home aged 83 after a long illness.
