I just want to do something different. I don't want an unbeatable hero. I think if we put ordinary people in such an exciting situation, that would be more close to the real life. That's something different from John Woo, usually John Woo puts a male-bonding superhero in his movies and Chow Yun Fat is unbeatable. Also, sometimes, he dies at the end of the movie. In his concept, Chow Yun Fat is unbeatable. But I'd rather put ordinary people in that situation. Even in God of Gamblers, he lost his memories and he was helpless. I think that would be more interesting to everybody.

From the West, my idol is Norman Jewison - the director who directed The Cincinnati Kid; which gave me the idea for God of Gamblers. From Asia, Sammo Hung and, of course, Bruce Lee (when asked who are his influences for films and television).

The most important day for me is not the first day of shooting, it is the opening day. If the audience likes the movie, then I have done my job...to me a director is like a chef. I make the dishes that the audience wants to eat. Most directors love their movies, but I never fall in love with mine. When they are editing, it's like they are making love to the film. They hate to finish it. But I don't. I always edit my movies very fast. I try to give the audience what they want. That's the way I've done it for the last 20 years.
