- Best known for his 1959 hit, "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy." Also had a hit version of "The Ballad of Davey Crockett" in 1955.
- Hank Garland played closed chord 'sock' rhythm guitar on many of Mac Wiseman's Dot recordings in addition to playing mandolin on several as well. Garland would also play some electric lead guitar on Wiseman's recordings.
- He recorded with big-band leader Woody Herman, singer-songwriter John Prine, and funk bassist Bootsy Collins. He made his first recording as a bassist with old-timey singer Molly O'Day in 1946. Flatt and Scruggs hired him as a rhythm guitarist, and then he joined Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. He was a member of the casts of radio shows such as "Louisiana Hayride" and "Old Dominion Barn Dance.".
- One of his signature songs is the bluegrass gospel standard, "Tis Sweet To Be Remembered," which he first recorded in 1951.
