- Randall Winston is a 1985 graduate of Southfield-Lathrup High School in Southfield, a suburb of Detroit. The school merged with cross-town school Southfield High in 2016 and is now used as an alternative education building. The school's mascot was a Charger and the colors were red and white. Winston was active in the theater program while a student there.

- Close friends with Scrubs and Spin City producer Bill Lawrence since they were roommates in the early 1990s. Lawrence credits his friendship with Winston as the inspiration for two friendships depicted on his television programs: J.D. Dorian (Zach Braff) and Chris Turk (Donald Faison) from Scrubs and Carter Heywood (Michael Boatman) and Stuart Bondek (Alan Ruck) on Spin City.
