Biography

Darryl Winston is himself something of a Washington music institution. He has conducted, directed or been a featured baritone soloist in nearly 200 different opera, operetta or musical theater productions. Mr. Winston is also a recognized historian of American musical theater, whose studies have ranged from the works of Victor Herbert up to the present day. His singing teachers have included such legendary performers as Jennie Tourel, George London and Augusta Wilsonne. Most recently Mr. Winston has become the Artistic and Managing Director of the Washington National Wagner Society. He is also Music Director of the Universalist National Memorial Church. Of his performance in Cosi Fan Tutte as Don Alfonso, Octavio Rocca of the Washington Post wrote, "As Don Alfonso Mr. Winston has the richest voice in the cast; savoring each morsel of sound before letting it go." Of Mr. Winston's performance as Ned in Joplin's "Treemonisha'' ConcertoNet.com wrote: "Mr. Winston could hold his own in any major opera house. The audience loved him." Mr. Winston maintains a vocal studio where he teaches new vocal students and keeps the established singer in shape. He has receieved the Victor Herbert Foundation Grant numerous times, The Common Good of the Community Grant, The Farber Scholarship, The DC Music Educators' Vocal Award, The DePauw Scholarship, and holds the Governor of Georgia's Aide de Campe Citation for Valor. Mr. Winston has been the DC Chapter President of the Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy Club. Mr. Winston is no stranger to film and TV as both actor and historian .
