Biography

Lucy Winer has been directing and producing award-winning documentaries for over 30 years. Committed throughout her career to issues of social concern. Winer’s work has been distributed theatrically in this country and overseas, and broadcast nationally on PBS, POV and cable. Her films have been featured at numerous festivals including Sundance, Berlin, Edinburgh, and Turin, and screened at the American Film Institute Theaters in L.A. and D.C., the Walker Art Institute, the Museum of Modern Art and the New Museum. Her awards include "Outstanding Film of the Year" from the London Film Festival, a Golden Plaque from the Chicago International Film Festival, a CINE Golden Eagle and an Emmy nomination for "Outstanding Picture."

Winer’s work has been called "warm, witty and genuinely touching" by the L.A. Times; "immensely affecting" by the Village Voice; "hilarious" by the Hollywood Reporter; "intriguing, often hair-raising" by the New York Times; "produced with humor, insight and irony" by Variety. Her directing credits include "Kings Park: Stories from an American Mental Institution," an unprecedented look at public mental health care in the U.S., and the POV documentary, "Golden Threads", capturing the life of 93 year old lesbian activist, Christine Burton. With Paula de Koenigsberg, she co-directed the controversial feature, "Rate It X", a scathing critique of sexism in America, today considered a classic in documentary cinema. In addition, Winer served as Series Producer and Program Director on the groundbreaking Public Television Series, "Positive: Life With HIV", cited by the Village Voice as a "stand out in the genre of AIDS documentaries," and her shorter works, "Greetings From Washington, D.C.", celebrating the First National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, and "Silent Pioneers", a first of its kind documentary about lesbian and gay seniors, have been acclaimed for their masterful storytelling and refreshing use of comedy to reveal as well as inspire. With funding from the Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care, Winer developed "Unlocked", a first of its kind, documentary-based web program of personal stories about public mental healthcare, past and present, aimed at people going into healthcare and working professionals.
