- Edward was educated at South Shields Grammar Tech (1958-65), Manchester University (1967-1970), graduating with BA Hons in 1970. He is the chair of the Northern Electric Arts Awards, on the board of Northern Stage Co, Royal Overseas League, British Actors Equity and the Directors Guild of Great Britain. He appeared in the television series When the Boat Comes In and Rockcliffes Babies.

He went on to be a member of the National Youth Theatre where he played a variety of roles over seven seasons before moving to London to star in Fuzz as a student protest leader. He then achieved recognition as Dr Billy Seaton in the television serial When the Boat Comes In. After some years, he concentrated on directing and became Artistic Director of North Yorkshire Television while continuing to act, appearing in the BBC television series Rockcliffe's Babies. His first directing job was The Taming of the Shrew for NYT on the request of Michael Croft.
