- Originally had a chemist shop and photographic business in Hove, England; very near G. A. Smith's St. Anne's Well Pleasure Garden
- Originally processed film for other early movie makers, before starting production of his own features.
- In 1908, he invented a device with which exhibitors could make their own intertitles. In 1910, he patented a projector which could intersperse slide titles into the films it showed.
