His son, Raffi Williams, is the deputy press secretary for the Republican National Committee (RNC).

Raised in the Episcopal branch of the Anglican church, of which is father, a boxing trainer, was a member. In 1958, his family moved to the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. He went on to graduate from Haverford College with a B.A. degree in philosophy in 1976.

After college, he immediately began his tenure at The Washington Post, for which he worked from 1976 to 1999. During his tenure at the Post, he held several positions, including editorial writer, op-ed columnist and White House correspondent.

A day after being fired by National Public Radio (NPR) over comments he made about Muslims on The Factor (1996), he was given a new multi-year deal with Fox News.

His son, Raffi Williams, and John Stossel's son both graduated from Haverford College, Juan's alma mater.
