A graduate of the UFA youth academy under Else Bongers, where he had musical, singing and dance training. In 1959, he passed his stage examination. This was followed by engagements at the Schauspielhaus Bochum, the Schauspielhaus Zurich, the Niedersächsisches Staatstheater Hannover and the Thalia Theater Hamburg, among others. On the screen, he appeared mainly in TV roles during the 1960s and 70s.
