- Introduced the saxophone (invented by Adolphe Sax in 1841) to American jazz bands in 1915 and become that instrument's foremost practitioner of the period.
- Made the first recording featuring the saxophone, "Canary Cottage", in 1917. In the course of his brief career, Wiedoft recorded more than 300 tracks for saxophone, including many of his own compositions for all the major record labels. He also organised a 1926 concert specifically for saxophone in New York, which was the first of its kind.
- Played violin as a child in his family's professional orchestra, before a sporting injury forced him to switch to clarinet and (later) saxophone.
- Led various orchestras, including the Frisco Jass band and Rudy Wiedoft's Californians.
