Began her film career as a research assistant to veteran screenwriter Barbara Turner. Later become Vice President of Development for 'Off Line Entertainment Group', a New York-based independent production company, where she supervised creative development for Off Line's film and television divisions. Widener has written articles and essays for numerous publications, including The Morning News, Creative Nonfiction, Tango magazine, The New York Daily News, Mr. Beller's Neighborhood, and Prison Life Magazine, where she was an editor for two years. In 1996 Widener taught three semesters of a film and writing workshop at Rikers Island. In 1999 she received The PASS Award (Prevention for a Safer Society) by the National Council on Crime and Delinquency for her work on HBO's Thug Life in D.C. (1998). A Greenwich Village native, Widener attended the United Nations International School, and graduated from Colgate University with a B.A. in English.
