American songwriter who composed hundreds of songs, many of them now standards. The daughter of a journalist, Whitson was born in Hickman County, Tennessee, where she collaborated with her sister Alice on lyrics. She also wrote poetry and was widely published as a poet and fiction writer. In 1909, she had a hit with her song "Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland," repopularized years later in the film In the Good Old Summertime (1949). Her most enduring song came in 1910: "Let Me Call You Sweetheart." She died at 51 in Nashville and was buried there.
