Biography

Julian White is a UK-based Chief Lighting Technician (Gaffer) with over 30 years’ experience across feature films, high-end television, and international commercial productions. Born in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, he spent much of his childhood in Senegal, Sweden, and India, an early exposure to diverse cultures and light that shaped his visual sensibility.

Originally trained as a painter at Liverpool Art School, Julian developed a strong foundation in colour, composition, and the emotional use of light. He also worked in theatre and performance art before moving into film, an influence that continues to inform his instinctive, story-led approach to lighting.

He has collaborated with cinematographers including Jarin Blaschke, Haris Zambarloukos, Martin Ruhe, Rob Hardy, Dick Pope, Alwin Küchler, Vanja Cercul, Sebastian Blenkov, Robert Richardson, Dariusz Wolski, and Janusz Kamiński, and with directors such as Robert Eggers, Ridley Scott, George Clooney, Werner Herzog, Antón Corbijn, Jon M. Chu, Andrew Dominik, and David Shane.

His credits include "The Martian", "Murder on the Orient Express", "Crazy Rich Asians", "The Midnight Sky", "The Boys in the Boat", "Cinderella", "Control", "Game of Thrones", "Lockwood & Co.", and "Werwulf". Known for combining technical precision with an artist’s eye, he leads crews with calm professionalism while shaping light to serve story, mood, and character.

Based in London, Julian continues to paint and photograph alongside his film work, maintaining a lifelong focus on light as the foundation of image-making.
