- The son of an English wigmaker, he began his Hollywood career in 1921. Few actors had photogenically perfect features. Makeup often obliterated the best facial bone structure. Westmore developed cosmetics that would look the same under diverse lighting conditions and with different types of film.

Perce was working at First National when Warner Brothers bought the company. At Warner's, he turned a mousy dishwater blonde from New England into Bette Davis and made Olivia de Haviland into one o the most delectable ingenues the screen had ever seen. He could go beyond glamour make up when required, as he proved when he turned Bette Davis into Queen Elizabeth I and on Casablanca helped Ingrid Bergman look her best without glamourising her or sacrificing the natural look that had made her a star.
