Biography

Steve Welch

Biography

  • Steve grew up in small town Oregon, where the rain, rural setting, and lack of cable television allowed him to spend considerable time in his own head. With complete and utter ignorance about the entertainment industry (and certainly no idea what an "editor" was) he signed up to attend Emerson College with an eye towards being an actor. A month before classes were to begin however, he realized he in no way had the aptitude for acting, but since he already had his plane ticket and some rad new acid-wash jeans he traipsed off to Boston anyway. He managed to luck into a work study job at the school's video equipment depot, mostly because he attended the interview along with a very attractive friend, and began fiddling around with the cameras and editing equipment where he soon found that long hours in dark rooms suited him. After graduating and working two years in Boston at a production company as an underpaid everything-boy, he headed back west to Los Angeles, full of charmingly unrealistic expectations. Luckily for him, he arrived in Hollywood at the same time as digital editing, and as he had two whole weeks of Avid training under his belt he began working as an editor right away. After several months of faking complete confidence during the day and then staying up all night to figure out what the heck he was doing, he got his first big-ish job on a small budget experimental HBO series called "Mr. Show with Bob and David," where his dorky absurdist sense of humor (the result of a childhood love of all things Monty Python) served him well, or well enough anyway. Over the following twenty years work came steadily and he honed his craft to the point where he's now not half bad at it.
