Streaming Stars, Then and Now

William Lucas (Bill) Walker is an Emmy-winning writer/producer best known for his work in television comedy. In 2023, 20th Television bought his spec pilot Dads of DeWitt for development by ABC, with comedy legend Norman Lear attached as Executive Producer. The show was Lear's last active project at the time of his death.

Walker is known for his work on Roseanne, Frasier (Emmy Award) and Will & Grace, voted three of the 101 Best Written TV Series by the Writers Guild of America. He left Will & Grace create the critically-acclaimed The Chris Isaak Show, a single-cam hour comedy about the music industry, which ran for three seasons on Showtime.

Walker is currently in post-production on his first documentary short film, Transcendence.

In 2026 he also began filming his first feature-length documentary, To Find Morrison, planned for release in 2027. The documentary explores the interplay between the life and work of acclaimed American artist Margaret Morrison.

A little-known fact about Walker is the reason for his decision to step away from television at the peak of his career. During the 12-year gap between Three Moons Over Milford (2006) and his return in 2018, Walker spent what may be one of the longest hiatuses in television, spending every day with his two children with Kelly Ziegler as a stay-at-home dad. His hands-on experience raising kids would later provide plenty of fodder for comedy projects he would go on to create in the second phase of his television career.

A shift in the focus of his writing began in 2012 when -- at the invitation of Arianna Huffington -- Walker turned his unconventional parenting adventures -- "dad raising children in Hollywood without a nanny" -- into a recurring humor column for The Huffington Post.

"Spilled Milk" -- the first regular column by an LGBT parent to run in a major U.S. publication -- made its debut on HuffPost's front page and quickly became a hit. Readers caught off guard by Walker's comedic take on marriage, politics and the changing face of the American family, spread the column widely, both privately and on social media. Walker return to television came in 2018. Called in to talk over new series ideas with Amazon Studios, one of the many streaming platforms that had mushroomed in his absence, Walker pitched his first new series in well over a decade. Amazon bought the pitch in the room. The main character in Time/Bolt, a time-travel comedy-adventure, was closely based on Walker's 12-year-old son James, who not surprisingly considers it Walker's best work.

In 2019, Walker's manager Zadoc Angell suggested that he should consider adapting his Huffington Post column for television. After pitching his idea separately to both Imagine Television and former CBS chairman-turned- producer Nina Tassler. Both made a bid for the project, but before a script could be written, the Covid pandemic struck, radically shrinking the television landscape.

Stuck at home like the rest of the world, Walker used the downtime turning his pitch into a spec pilot. The premise involved what it might be like if a liberal, two-daddy Hollywood family like Walker's decided to leave LA and return to his small Southern hometown in the heart of Trump country. In a twist Walker never saw coming, in 2022 his script caught the eye of Norman Lear, whose pioneering comedies of the 1970s had helped launch Walker TV writing dreams.

In Walker's boundary-pushing family comedy, Lear and his partner Brent Miller sensed an opportunity to extend Lear's legacy of tackling lightning-rod social issues for a new generation. They signed on to executive produce the project.

A few months later, in spring of 2023, Lear, Miller and Walker pitched his script to ABC. The next day, the network bought Dads of DeWitt to develop for its 2024-25 comedy slate. The day after that, production in Hollywood ground to a halt again, as a writers' strike began that would last for 148 days.

One result of the strike was even further constriction in the television industry that had begun with work stoppage during Covid. With only one comedy slot open in a year that would return Donald Trump to the White House, ABC opted to shelve the gay-dads-in-the-South comedy in favor of a vehicle for Tim Allen starring Tim Allen as a crotchety, Republican-leaning grandfather.

Prior to his television work, Walker was active in the New York theater. As founder and artistic director of Dragonfly Theatre Company, he collaborated with Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Lanford Wilson, directing the world premiere of Wilson's trio of one-acts, Hall of North American Forests. On opening night Walker met television writer/producer Tom Fontana. Fontana became a mentor, inviting Walker to learn about television production by shadowing Fontana's New York series Tattinger's.

After reading Walker's first crack at a spec script, Fontana encouraged him to move to Los Angeles and pursue are career television. Fontana gave Walker his first TV writing assignment, on the NBC comedy Home Fires.

Soon after, Walker was invited to join the prestigious Warner Bros. Television Writers' Workshop. Upon completing the workshop, he was hired as a staff writer on the new ABC series The Jackie Thomas Show. After writing special material for Roseanne Barr when she guested on the show, Walker was invited by Barr to join the writing staff of Roseanne. After three years honing his sitcom chops, Walker went on to write for the hit series Frasier, Cybill and Will & Grace, before leaving to co-create single-cam comedy The Chris Isaak Show for Showtime.

In the mid-90s, Walker became a founding member of "Sundays at 7," a series of floating dinners in L.A. restaurants aimed at bringing together a younger generation of TV writers with the legends who inspired their careers. Over dinner, comedy icons like Carl Reiner, Norman Lear, Mel Tonkin, Bob Newhart and Treva Silverman shared inside stories from their groundbreaking work on such classics as Your Show of Shows, I Love Lucy, All In The Family, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and M*A*S*H. Early in the Covid pandemic, the bitter national divide over masks prompted Walker to launch a social-media PSA campaign, The Who Am I? Mask Challenge. Ordinary Americans from 4 to 95 responded, posting their self-taped responses to the question, "Why do you wear a mask?" Soon athletes, Olympic gold medalists, TV, film and Broadway celebrities had joined in as well, using their personal voices to encourage the responsible use of mask-wearing to curb infection rates. In addition to HuffPost, Walker has written articles for the Writers Guild magazine Written By, Publishers Weekly, Your Teen Magazine, The Good Men Project and The New Civil Rights Movement. In early 2020, Walker returned for a month to the writers' room of Roseanne/The Conners to cover that show's record-breaking reboot after 20 years off the air. CAREER TRIVIA:

Walker's Season 4 Frasier episode "Are You Being Served?" drew the longest studio-audience laugh in the show's 11-year run. (When Frasier panics at hearing a bang he thinks is a gunshot, Niles emerges from a bathroom covered in shaving cream from Martin's exploded Hot-n-Foamy dispenser.)

In his Frasier episode "Roz's Krantz and Gouldenstein Are Dead" Walker was got to write guest character parts for acting legends Lois Smith and James Earl Jones. It was Jones' first appearance in a sitcom, resulting a comedy Emmy nod for Darth Vader.

Walker's "December Bride" episode for Roseanne made television history with primetime's first same-sex wedding featuring a popular series regular (Martin Mull as Roseanne Conner's nemesis and business partner, Leon Carp). In a rare executive move, ABC -- fearing a negative reaction from viewers -- chose to run the episode in a later time slot, with a parental warning.
