Biography

German character actor, initially a trained professional soldier and subsequently a journalist. On stage from 1897 in Cologne, later theatrically much active in Munich and Vienna. In films from 1915, though critical success only after the advent of sound pictures. At his best in benevolent, patriarchal aristocratic roles, or as officers and academics.

The actor Gustav Waldau began his impressive film career in the silent movie era with the movies "Der Hauptmann-Stellvertreter" (1915), "Sein Seitensprung" (1915) and "Der Taugenichts" (1922). But at that time the film was only a small niche in his life, he dedicated most of his time to the theater.

His acting abilities were still demanded after the war and he completed his long-standing film career with the productions "Der Engel mit der Posaune" (1948), "Schloss Hubertus" (1954) and "Die Medaille" (1955).

Gustav Waldau was able to continue his career undiminished during wartime and entertained the audience with movies like "Die Geierwally" (1940), "Operette" (1940), "Jenny und der Herr im Frack" (1941) and "Münchhausen" (1943).

When the sound film arose his engagements for movies became soon numerous. He was put into action as a popular support actor in many well-known productions.
