Biography

Andrucha Waddington (born Andrew Waddington on January 20th, 1970) is a Brazilian film and TV director, screenwriter and producer. His film credits include "Me You Them" (2000, distributed in the US and worldwide by Sony Pictures Classics), Mention Spéciale of the Un Certain Regard Jury in Cannes, and Official Selection of the Toronto and Sundance Film Festivals; Brazil's official entry to the Academy Awards (Best Foreign Language Film); and winner, Best Film, at the Karlovy Vary, Havana, and Cartagena Film festivals; "The House of Sand" (2005, distributed in the US by SPC and sold worldwide by Fortissimo Films), a Berlin, Toronto, and Sundance festivals official selection, winner of the Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Script and Alfred Sloan awards; and the Brazil/Spain co-production "Lope" (2010, distributed by Fox in Spain and Warner in Latin America, sold worldwide by Wild Bunch), a Venice and Toronto festivals official selection and winner of two Goya Awards. Andrucha Waddington also directed and produced the Brazilian blockbuster "Party Crashers" (2012), the biopic "Chacrinha - O Velho Guerreiro" (2018), the thriller "O Juízo" (2019); and "Vitoria" (in post-production, to be released in Brazil in 2025 by Sony Pictures), featuring Academy Award-nominee Fernanda Montenegro.

He also directed and produced the theatrical film documentaries "Gilberto Gil - Viva Sao João" (2002) and "Maria Bethania - Pedrinha de Aruanda" (2007). His TV director and executive producer credits include the Conspiração/TV Globo free TV drama series "Under Pressure" (5 Seasons, 2017-2022) which got rave reviews and skyrocket ratings; the documentary-series "André Midani - From Vinyl to Download" (2015); and the limited series "The End" (2023, Globoplay). He is currently directing and producing the limited series "Angela Diniz - Murdered and Convicted," for the HBO Max streaming service; and the untitled Netflix documentary on Real Madrid's giant soccer player Vini Jr.

Together with Fernando Meirelles and Daniela Thomas, he was also one of the creative directors of the iconic Rio 2016 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

Andrucha Waddington has since 1995 been a partner with Rio de Janeiro-based Conspiração Filmes, a Brazilian leading production company.
