- Manuel Vázquez Montalbán was born on July 27, 1939 in Barcelona, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. He was a writer and actor, known for El laberinto griego (1992), Asesinato en el Comité Central (1982) and Pepe Carvalho (1999). He was married to Anna Sallés. He died on October 18, 2003 in Bangkok, Thailand.

- Catalan patriot, enthusiastic supporter of Barcelona football club, best-selling crimewriter (he was translated into 20 languages), poet and journalist, Vázquez was also a thorn in the side of the Franco regime. Through ingenuity, and probably protected by his popularity, he managed to avoid a gaol sentence of more than three years (he served 18 months).
