Biography

Slavko Vorkapich was born on March 17, 1894 in Dobrinci near Sremska Mitrovica, Austria-Hungary [now Serbia]. He was a director, known for Hanka (1955), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) and The Life and Death of 9413, a Hollywood Extra (1928). He died on October 20, 1976 in Mijas, Málaga, Andalucía, Spain.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Anne Friedberg $25,000 in 2009 to research and write a multimedia project about Vorkapich.

Art Clokey created Gumby, which made its debut on The Howdy Doody Show in August 1956, while studying under Vorkapich at USC.

In Hollywood from 1922 as writer, occasional director and montage expert.

Father of tv commercial producer Eddie Vorkapich who was business partners with photographer Bert Stern.
