- President of Germany from 1984 to 1994. He is one of three presidents (Theodor Heuss and Heinrich Lübke were the others) to have served two terms.
- Being Governing Mayor of West Berlin from 1981 to 1984, he received US President Ronald Reagan in 1982.
- Born to German diplomat Ernst von Weizsäcker and his wife Marianne von Graevenitz, he has three siblings: Carl Friedrich, a noted philosopher, Adelheid and Heinrich von Weizsäcker.
- Grandfather of Antonia von Weizsäcker.
- In 1985, he became the first West German head of state to visit Israel. In 1986, he became the first German to address a joint session of the UK parliament.
- Had four children: Robert von Weizsäcker (b. 1954), Andreas von Weizsäcker (1956-2008), Beatrice von Weizsäcker (b. 1958) and Fritz Eckhart (b. 1960).
