- Son of Friedrich von Thun
- On "Kronprinz Rudolf" Max von Thun played the role of the Heir Archduke Rudolf, whose first cousin and successor as Heir Archduke Franz-Ferdinand was married (not dynastically) to the Countess Sophia Chotek, who happened to be Max's great-grand-aunt. At the same time, one of the characters was the Chancellor Eduard, Count Taaffe, whose great-great-grandfather was Countess Sophia Chotek's great-great-grand-uncle.

- Both his parents are from Austria and he also holds Austrian citizenship.
- He is the author of two children's books, "Der Sternenmann", published in 2018, and "Kleiner Tiger, müder Krieger", published in 2019.
- He was initially a judge on the sixth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar (2002) but left after the first casting due to serious disagreements with Dieter Bohlen. He was replaced by Volker Neumüller.
- Has a sister, Katharina, known as Gioia von Thun.
