Biography

August von Mackensen was born on December 6, 1849 in Haus Leipnitz, Province of Saxony, Kingdom of Prussia [now Saxony, Germany]. He was a writer, known for Totenkopfreiter (1917), Hearst-Selig News Pictorial, No. 28 (1915) and Pathé News, No. 100 (1916). He died on November 8, 1945 in Habighorst [now Lower Saxony], Germany.

He was a top German field commander during World War I.

Mackensen and Erich Ludendorff were the principal former senior officers of the old Imperial German army to actively support Hitler's Nazi Party.
