Hitler wanted to meet him but Habsburg refused.

He was not allowed to enter Austrian territory after World War Two until 1966.

Godson of Emperor Franz Josef.

Member of the European Parliament (Bavarian Christian Social Union), and president of the Pan-European League from 1979 to 1999.

As a child, he lived in exile in Switzerland and Madeira, and went to high school in Spain. In Belgium, he earned a doctorate in political and social sciences at the University in Louvain. He tried to return to Austria in 1938 to fight the Anschluss. Because of his opposition to Hitler, he spent most of World War II in the US.

Was personally approached by Francisco Franco to rule Spain, but declined the offer.
