She made her stage debut in Basel in 1875, afterwards followed engagements in Karlsruhe, Danzig and Hamburg.

In January 1894, Marie accompanied her husband to Cairo, where he was hoping to receive treatment at a German-run sanatorium. The great musician died a few weeks later, though.

Marie's father, Stanislaus Schanzer, rose to become Minister of Defence in Austria.

Shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, Marie von Bülow returned to acting and took supporting roles in film over the next ten years. Among other roles, she played beggars, mothers-in-law and landowners, but above all, mothers again and again.

With von Bülow's approval, Marie continued to appear on the stage after their marriage, but at the end of 1884 intrigues by the Duke of Meiningen's consort, who was envious of Marie's beauty and talent, led to her dismissal from the court theatre's company. Marie now dedicated herself fully to creating a home for her husband, whom she supported throughout all the conflicts that his outspoken character got him into.

She also looked after her husband during his attacks of intense neuralgic pain.

Marie von Bülow was successful with classic roles which led her to Berlin as well.

She was an Austrian-German stage and film actress.

Her last cinematical works came at the beginning of the 20s.

She became an actress at the court theatre in Meiningen, where she played leading roles in plays by Schiller, Goethe, and Shakespeare. In July 1882 Marie became the second wife of composer Hans von Bülow, who was then also based in Meiningen, building the court orchestra into one of the finest ensembles in Germany.

In the field of the tragic lover, she took on classic stage roles such as Klarchen in Goethe's tragedy Egmont, Gretchen in Faust and Jane Eyre (from the play based on the Charlotte Brontë novel of the same name).

After Hans von Bülow's death in 1894, she - as his widow - took care of her husband's estate and published von Bülow's letters. She was also a patron and supported young musicians in her adopted home of Berlin.

When she got married with the conductor Hans von Bülow in 1882 she retired from the acting. Only many years after his death she returned to the stage in 1914.

Richard Oswald, Jaap Speyer, Richard Eichberg, Fern Andra, Martin Berger, Viggo Larsen, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau and, again and again, Hubert Moest were among the most important directors who cast her on several occasions.

Marie founded a charitable salon in her Berlin home in 1914, with the proceeds from recitals going to the families of soldiers killed during World War I.
