Mother of jewel designer Margo Manhattan.

New York City Ballet's principal dancer in the 1970s and close friend of George Balanchine.

After Balanchine's death, she staged his works for other companies in the United States and abroad. She served as ballet mistress in the New York City Ballet until 2016.

Her father, a scientist, went to a meeting in Czechoslovakia near the end of WWII but never returned. After the war, her mother moved with her three daughters to West Berlin, where Karin studied ballet as a child. When she was 17, she joined the Frankfurt Opera Ballet.
