- Nguyen Giap Vo was born on August 25, 1911 in An Xa, Vietnam. He was an actor, known for Vietnam: A Television History (1983), From Hollywood to Hanoi (1992) and Cold War (1998). He was married to Dang Bich Hai, Quang Thai and Minh Khai. He died on October 4, 2013 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

- He was the son of a rice farmer. At the age of 14, he joined a secret nationalist movement. He graduated from Hanoi University with a doctorate, and taught history at a private school.
- His family name "Vo" means "force" and his first name Giap means "strong armor".
- He had a special interest in the military strategies of Napoleon. One student recalled that Vo could draw the French emperor's battle plans from memory. He published several books on military tactics.

- Trained, along with Ho Chi Minh, by the OSS during World War II to fight the Japanese in a unit comparable to the OSS's French Jedburghs called the OSS Deer Team.
