Rena Vlahopoulou(1923-2004)

Rena Vlahopoulou was a Greek actress and singer whose career spanned theatre, film, and popular music, becoming one of the most recognizable comedic performers in Greek entertainment. She began as a singer in the late 1930s, initially performing in Athens’ revue and music stages, where her talent and timing quickly drew attention and led to early recording work and collaborations with leading composers of the period. Her distinctive voice and stage presence established her in both light entertainment and jazz-influenced repertoire before she gradually moved into acting, first in revue theatre and later in cinema. During the 1950s and 1960s she became a major star of Greek film comedy, working closely with directors such as Giannis Dalianidis and Alekos Sakellarios and appearing in a series of commercially successful productions, including Something Hot (1964), I hartopaihtra (1964), Koritsia gia filima (1965), Mia trelli... trelli... sarantara (1970), and I theia mou, i hipissa (1970), as well as The Countess of Corfu (1972), which reinforced her association with popular musical comedy and strong, energetic character roles. Her work combined sharp comedic instincts with musical performance, often integrating songs into narrative structures and shaping her screen persona around improvisation and rhythmic delivery. Alongside cinema, she remained active in theatre and revue, sustaining a long presence on the Athenian stage and maintaining close ties with major theatre companies. In later years she also appeared in television productions and continued occasional stage and music projects, while remaining a prominent cultural figure associated with postwar Greek popular entertainment.
