- Was awarded the prestigious Raghupathy Venkaiah award by the State Government of Andhra Pradesh for his outstanding contribution to Telugu cinema in 1991.

- Swathi Muthyam was the official Indian entry for Best Foreign Film for the Oscars in the year it was released
- Recipient of 11 Filmfare awards (the 'Indian Oscars) for Best Director and Best Script
- Recipient of the AP State Government Golden Nandi Awards starting from Best Picture for his very first directorial venture (Atma Gowravam) followed by two consecutive awards in the same category in the following years creating a 'hatrick' record. In later years, most of his movies have fetched the Best Film; Best Story; Best Director awards for himself and also for other actors, actresses and technicians.
