Biography

Suzy Vanherberghen was a Flemish actress. She was an icon in the Ghent folk theatre.

Together with her husband, Raymond Vanherberghen, Suzy was one of the last original members of the Koningsbeeren, the company founded by Romain Deconinck, icon of Ghent's folk theatre, in the early 1950s.

As a member of the theatre company De Beren, she and her husband would appear on stage at the Ghent Minardschouwburg more than 5,000 times. That's where the couple met, in 1952. "Raymond was a novice actor, Suzy a young dancer".

Suzy initially performed as a stand-in for sick actors, and later often played the role of a maid. "After all, with my build, I wasn't exactly cut out for romantic roles, was I?" she joked after their final joint performance, rubbing her plump belly.

Her passing received extensive coverage in the regional media at the time, with colleagues and friends reflecting on her rich life and contribution to the Flemish cultural landscape.
