Biography

John Van Valkenburgh attended the prestigious University of California at Santa Barbara for almost one year. His set lighting debut was in the American Film Institue student film "Ralph, the Waiter". He made a big splash in the genre world having worked as a scenic artist on Leprechaun 5: In the Hood (2000), a horror thriller for Trimark Pictures, where he painted walls white. Among his numerous credits are such classic films and television shows as Miss Castaway and the Island Girls (2004), Chupacabra Terror (2005), Ring of Death (2008), Jack the Reaper (2011), Megachurch Murder (2015), Mega Python vs. Gatoroid (2011), Pizza Man (2011), Coop and Cami Ask the World (2018), Deadwood: The Movie (2019), Crank Yankers (2002), and PEN15 (2019). He teaches classes on lighting programming. During the writer's strike of 2023, he worked as a lighting technician and lighting programmer on weddings and bar mitzvahs. As a hobby, he tinkers with old lighting consoles.
