- Bernard Van Eeghem was born on October 14, 1953 in Comines, Nord, France. He was an actor, known for Brussels by Night (1983), Zyklus von Kleinigkeiten (1998) and Max et Bobo (1998). He died on August 18, 2024 in Brussels, Belgium.
- Van Eeghem combined teaching with his artistic practice. He taught at the Lemmens Institute, was a guest lecturer at the RITS, and was a jury member of the Theater Festival in Antwerp.
- Van Eeghem was a 'multi-artist': he wrote, acted, directed, coached and painted.
- His adoptive parents provided a warm nest, but the questions surrounding his birth as an unnamed child of a presumably Antwerp teenage mother in France would strongly influence Van Eeghem's work. Albeit in a positive sense, because the self-proclaimed dreamer automatically became an artist. "Mother read poems by Gezelle to me, and my interest in architecture and visual arts came through my father (at the time chief architect of the province of West Flanders, ed.).
- Van Eeghem's work contained many references to cultural history, but without any pretension. Even his humor sometimes came in such diluted doses that you didn't notice he was making fun.
- For him there was no separation between his life and his work, his home and his studio. The walls were covered from top to bottom with photos and articles from newspapers and magazines. These spanned many decades and documented what he himself found interesting, charming or moving. Life as a collage.
- Art is the idea, no matter who pays for it or gives the assignment: a chieftain, the court, the neighbor, emperors, kings, nobility, bourgeoisie, best friends, one's own brain, art is the quick diversion of a river, the building of a bridge, a house of one's own, art is folding a piece of paper, boning a branch, exhibiting a horse, exhibiting no horse, exhibiting nothing, exhibiting oneself, speaking the poem. Art is the expression of that idea, that feeling, that thought and always arte povera, expressing it as much as possible with as few poor means as possible
