- José van Dam was born on August 25, 1940 in Brussels, Belgium. He was an actor, known for Don Giovanni (1979), Babel opéra, ou la répétition de Don Juan de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1985) and Otello (1974). He died on February 17, 2026 in Croatia.

- He did performances with major companies, such as London's Covent Garden, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
- Sang at the funeral of King Baudouin in 1993. He did the same in 2014 for the funeral of Queen Fabiola.
- Also the driving force behind the Queen Elisabeth Competition for Singing, from 1988 onwards, where he served on the jury.
