Biography

Joseph A. Valentine was born on July 24, 1900 in New York City, New York, USA. Joseph was a cinematographer, known for Rope (1948), Shadow of a Doubt (1943) and Saboteur (1942). Joseph was married to Catherine Schramm and Theresa Coords. Joseph died on May 18, 1949 in Cheviot Hills, California, USA.

Started as camera assistant after World War I. Full director of photography at Fox, 1924-1930. Under contract to Universal, 1936-1946. His best period was between 1938 and 1941, when he received four Academy Award nominations. Died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 48, having just won his only Oscar for Joan of Arc (1948).

Father of cameraman Joseph F. Valentine.

Member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC).

Parents were Florence Lauria and Frank Valentino.
