Biography

Aida Turturro is an American actress best known for playing Janice Soprano on the HBO drama series The Sopranos (1999). Aida Turturro was born in Brooklyn, New York, daughter of a Sicilian mother, Dorothy, a homemaker, and an Italian-American father, Domenick Turturro, an artist. After graduating from high school, Turturro earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre from the State University of New York at New Paltz.

Cousin of Nicholas Turturro, John Turturro, and Ralph Turturro. First cousin once removed of Arianna Turturro and Diego Z. Turturro.

Long-time friend of her The Sopranos (1999) co-star, James Gandolfini. In addition to the HBO series, they appeared in three feature films together -- Angie (1994), Fallen (1998) and Romance & Cigarettes (2005). (She played Gandolfini's daughter in Romance & Cigarettes (2005), and his sister in The Sopranos (1999).) The two also appeared in the 1992 Broadway revival of "A Streetcar Named Desire", which starred Jessica Lange and Alec Baldwin.

Majored in theatre at State University of New York, New Paltz (Class of 1984). Played Mayor Dawgmeat in the SUNY New Paltz production of the musical "Li'l Abner" during her senior year.
