    His interest in drama was stimulated by his army service in 1945, when he found himself part of a mobile educational theatre unit which performed plays in army camps throughout Europe and the Middle East. Others in this troupe included Roger Moore, Alan Badel and Stephen Murray. After leaving the army, Turner was a teacher for nine years, but then became a full-time writer.
