Evgeniy Tsymbal is a Soviet and Russian feature and documentary film director, historian, screenwriter, editor.

Evgeniy Tsymbal comes from the Krasnodar region, from the city of Yeysk. Since childhood he loved cinema. In 1971 he graduated from the history department of Rostov State University. Then he worked there as a sociologist for three years and wrote his dissertation. He moved to Moscow and by chance ended up at Mosfilm, where he worked as a senior administrator, assistant director, and second director. In particular, Evgeniy Tsymbal had the opportunity to work as an assistant and second director for Andrei Tarkovsky on the set of the film Stalker (1979).

In 1981, he made his screen debut in a small role in the film Family Relations (1982). In 1984, Evgeniy Tsymbal studied at the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors, directing department, workshop of Eldar Ryazanov. Ryazanov gave him the opportunity to show his acting skills in small roles in the film A Cruel Romance (1984). Subsequently, Evgeniy Tsymbal appeared in episodic roles in several more famous films - Forgotten Tune for the Flute (1987), Povest nepogashennoy luny (1990) and The Barber of Siberia (1998) - but acting never became his calling.

Since 1988, Evgeniy Tsymbal has been acting as a production director for Mosfilm. He debuts with the medium-length film Zashchitnik Sedov (1988) based on the story by Ilya Zveryov, immediately gaining international recognition. At the International Film Festival in Mannheim, the film received a special jury prize and the FIPRESCI Award, and then many more awards at other festivals, as well as an award from the British Academy of Film and Television as the best short film of the year.
