  • Had a successful career in silent films. During World War II, he was used by the Nazis for anti-British propaganda films. After the war, he was consequently sentenced to three years jail 'for support of an enemy during wartime'. However, the sentence was eventually commuted.
  • Saw action as a cavalry officer during World War I, was severely wounded and invalided out service.
  • He came from a good family and got married with Alma, an alleged daughter from a liaison between baroness Mary Vetsera and the Austrian successor to the throne Rudolf. Alma committed suicide one year later.
  • He served for the Manchester regiment during World War I and was wounded in 1916 which led to his release as a "war-disabled person".
