His wife Sophie was murdered in Cork, Ireland - still no-one has been charged with the crime, although police allegedly know who did it.

Five children: David Toscan du Plantier and Ariane Toscan Du Plantier (with first wife Marie-Christine Barrault), Carlo Toscan du Plantier (with second wife Francesca Comencini), Tosca and Maxime (with fourth wife Melita Nikolic). He was also close to his stepson Pierre, from his third wife Sophie Bouniol's previous marriage.

He was in Berlin for the Film Festival when he died in 2003. He is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
