The Danish-British star, a long-term member of the union, is a well-known broadcaster, actor, comedienne, novelist, and producer, familiar to audiences for fronting shows including "QI", "The Great British Bake Off", and "15 to 1". Her writing credits span theatre, TV, and radio, and she has written more than 20 fiction and nonfiction books for children and adults. In 2019 her adaptation of "Mamma Mia! The Party" will open at London's 02.

Toksvig's experience as a political activist and long-time champion for gender equality, including co-founding the Women's Equality Party, stands her in good stead to continue to build on the union's legacy of campaigning for equality and diversity.

Because her father Claus Toksvig was covering the Apollo mission, at the moment when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon, Sandi, age 11, was in Houston's Mission Control, holding the hand of Mr. Armstrong's secretary.
She spoke with a strong New York accent when she first came to the UK at 13 and found that nobody would talk to her. After six months at school, she decided to adopt an English accent to help her make friends, and after watching the film Brief Encounter (1945) she decided to try to emulate actress Celia Johnson's speaking voice.
Has three children: two daughters, Megan (b. 1988) and Jesse (b. 1990), and one son, Theo (b. 1994), with former partner Peta Stewart, before they separated in 1997. The children were conceived through artificial insemination by donor Christopher Lloyd Pack (Roger Lloyd Pack's brother) and carried by Stewart.
She was born in Denmark but grew up in the USA until, at age 14, she moved to the UK, where she has lived ever since.
Lives on a houseboat in Wandsworth with wife Debbie.
