- By 2014, when Michael Tilson Thomas and Joshua Mark Robison were married, they had been romantic partners for 38 years. They first met as fellow students at Walter Reed Junior High School in North Hollywood. Though both were orchestra members (Thomas played oboe and piano; Robison played cello) and their families were acquainted, they didn't become friends until later.
- In 2012 during an interview with Terry Gross on the National Public Radio program "Fresh Air," Thomas said that father had changed his last name in an attempt to establish an acting career without the associations of his famous name, and also because there was a small but intense group of stalker-level fans harassing the family.
