Current conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Tenure started in 1993. Lives in San Francisco with partner Josh Robison.

Is also founder and conductor of the New World Symphony located in Miami Beach, Florida.

Currently recording a series of live Mahler symphony concerts. Five are already released. Tours with the San Francisco Symphony every year, usually to Europe and the United States.

They first met as fellow students at Walter Reed Junior High School in North Hollywood. Though both were orchestra members (Thomas played oboe and piano; Robison played cello) and their families were acquainted, they didn't become friends until later.
